The Scanlation Process

“Scanlation (also scanslation) is the fan-made scanning, translation, and editing of comics from a language into another language.” (Wikipedia)

Like other fan translation groups, our scanlation process includes five main parts:

Scanning TranslationScript editingCleaningTypesetting

Scanning involves purchasing the manga magazines/volumes (which are the “raws” of the chapter) each month and then scanning each page. Raws can be scanned as is from the book or de-binded; the latter provides higher quality images for the cleaner to work with since the book spine makes it hard for the pages to lay flat.

Translation converts the Japanese script of the raws into English text. It takes 2-3 hours for our translator to translate the typical Splatoon manga chapter.

Script editing takes the translation and localizes it into more common phrasing, creating world play with similar meaning to the original, and inserting the North American Splatoon vocabulary where necessary.

Cleaning tidies up the raw images through removing the dialogue and certain sound-effects and redrawing the pictures affected by this process. The pages are also straightened and their levels are adjusted to get the lightest whites and darkest blacks.

Typesetting adds in the new script and sound effects with a handful of fonts. Usually done in batches of 10 pages by our typesetter, the text generally follows the formatting of the raws dialogue while adding personal design sensibilities.

Once typesetting is done, the chapter is not immediately ready for publishing. We go through many, many cycles of quality check because seeing the dialogue along side the visuals adds another level of context to the story that we need to take into account. Script editing and typesetting are redone ad nauseum along layout critiques till we feel the issue is finally complete.

Questions & Answers

Q: Why is your group called the "Inkstrike Reserve"?
A: It's a nickname taken from the previous Splatoon manga translator V's scanlation of Chapter 1. Rider calls the rest of Team Yellow-Green "the Inkstrike Reserve" as they ink over Arowana Mall.

Q: Why is Bobble your Twitter icon?
A: Because Bobble is a character that we all like! She is also the personal fave of our translator, Ingu (who is saddened whenever Bobble isn't in an issue). The Bobble transparent in our credits page was made by Squidfemme.

Q: How long till you guys release another scanlated chapter?
A: We cannot give definite release dates since our free time depends on how busy our lives are at the moment. Generally we release a chapter once a month, but please respect our work process and do not message us asking for the next issue.

Q: Where can I buy the official English version of the Splatoon manga?
A: You can purchase volumes from your local bookstore, Amazon, or Viz Media’s official site.

Q: Where can I buy the original Japanese version of the Splatoon manga?
A: You can purchase Monthly Corocoro magazines and Shogakukan volumes on JP Amazon.

Q: When will the next chapter be released in Japanese?
A: You can keep track of new issues by following the creator, Sankichi Hinodeya, on Twitter.

Q: When will the next volume be released in English?
A: You can view volume release dates on Viz Media’s website.

Q: Can I join the Inkstrike Reserve?
A: Nice enthusiasm, but when we are in need of new members, we will advertise on our Twitter or seek them out personally.

Q: How do I report an error in an issue?
A: Please direct message us on Twitter or through our leader’s tumblr.

Q: Why aren’t raw chapter scans added to masterpost anymore?
A: Chapter scans were something our previous scanner Snowy provided for the community independently of us, but she retired from doing that back in July 2018. We, as a team, just focus on completing scanlated chapter and adding the finished version onto the masterpost instead.

Q: Can I repost your chapters on X website?
A: No. Mangadex has the most up-to-date versions since we edit and fix any errors we find post-release; websites that repost do not receive these updates. You can link to our chapters on Mangadex if you are interested in sharing our work.

Q: May I use your scanlations to translate the Splatoon manga into X language?
A: Please direct message us on Twitter for further discussion.

Q: When will the Emperor, Sennyu, or Mecha gear sets from the Splatoon manga come to non-Japanese players?
A: We cannot say. As far as we know, Nintendo and Viz Media have not spoken about including gear codes in volumes or on the Nintendo e-Shop.
